VVD wil strafbaarstelling steun voor Hamas en rechtvaardigen van 7 oktober/ Dutch PFD wants to criminalize support for Hamas and justifying October 7th
This article was written in response to reactions regarding the demonstration in support of Hamas.
Zo is Hamas ontstaan.
Last Saturday, a demonstration took place in Amsterdam featuring Palestinian flags—flags that, on the morning of October 12, 2026, were described on the WNL program *Goedemorgen Nederland* as belonging to a "terrorist organization."
Iran is also labeled "terrorist," yet no one describes the Iranian flag as "terrorist" when it appears at protests or demonstrations.
It is essential to set the facts straight.
THE ORIGIN OF HAMAS
In June 1967, Israel fought the Six-Day War against Arab nations. Israeli forces attacked Egyptian troops in Gaza and drove them out of the enclave.
The war against Arab nations was also officially announced by the then-Israeli Prime Minister, Levi Eshkol, through a declaration of war.
This marked the beginning of the Israeli colonization of Gaza. It was not merely an occupation, as 21 permanent settlements were built. Subsequently, the Israelis began to oppress the local population.
The immediate trigger for the emergence of Hamas was an incident in December 1987, in which an Israeli truck driver deliberately rammed a car carrying Palestinian workers from Jabaliya (north of Gaza City). Four of them lost their lives.
The way the occupying Israeli army handled the situation—with the truck driver going unpunished—ignited anger among the occupied population, leading to the uprising we all know as the First Intifada. A small group of men subsequently decided to form an armed resistance. That is how Hamas came into being. The stated aim that "Israel must be destroyed" lies at the heart of this.
Labeling Hamas a terrorist organization is a blatant distortion of history, originating from a foreign power that wants the Netherlands and rest of the Western world to view the group in that light.
How can Palestinians in Gaza, whose existence is under threat, be called "terrorists" when they want to commit an act of resistance in their own country, against those defined under international law as a foreign power?
The colonies were unilaterally dismantled by Ariel Sharon in 2005. Yet, little changed as a result. Because Gaza is part of the State of Palestine, of which the occupied West Bank is also part of.
Israeli colonists in Gaza were furious at Sharon’s unilateral move and his decision requiring all colonists to leave the territory. Consequently, the colonists decided to smash and destroy the homes they had built before leaving the enclave. Some colonists refused to leave, forcing the colonizing army to intervene.
The only democratic elections in Gaza were held in 2006. Israel had warned that it would intervene if the elections went ahead, as it did not want Hamas to win due to the group's stated position that Israel must be destroyed.
However, that statement was inspired by a mistranslation of a different remark:
In 2005, the media in the United States helped the Israelis in seeking authority in their nuclear view by reporting that the then-president of Iran, Mahmoud Ahmedinedjad, said in a speech that "Israel must be wiped out from the map."
Seven years later, a Saudi blogger was found explaining that Ahmedinedjad never used the words "wipe out from the map." Instead, he was saying: "Israel must be erased in the face of time."
The Israelis took advantage of the Western refusal to correct the misinterpretation. It is here that the Israeli claim that Iran is an "existential threat" comes from.
Ahmadinejad made the statement during a visit to Tehran by representatives of the Orthodox Jewish community.
Nevertheless, the elections proceeded as planned and were won by Hamas. Immediately afterwards, Israel decided to close all land borders and the airspace over Gaza. Egypt followed suit, and subsequently, Gaza's territorial waters were also blockaded.
INTERNATIONAL LAW
The declaration of war issued by Levi Eshkol in June 1967 has never been revoked to this day. This means that the Israeli authorities remain a belligerent party. Consequently, the people of Gaza continue to be a population living under occupation. Hence the following:
The United Nations, however, regards Hamas as a political movement, whereas its armed wings fall under the rules governing military occupation; these rules stipulate that an occupied population has the right to form armed groups to resist the occupation.
Hamas members therefore have every right to resist the Israeli occupation of Gaza.
When exercising this right, they must distinguish themselves from the civilian population or—pursuant to Articles 43 and 44 of Additional Protocol I to the Geneva Conventions—at the very least carry their weapons openly during attacks and combat operations.
OCTOBER 7th
International law is clear, and this has even been confirmed—albeit in cryptic terms—by the United Nations Secretary-General: "It did not happen in a vacuum."
After all, events took place in the years leading up to October 7—particularly in 2018 and 2022—that compelled Hamas to launch a defensive attack against the Israelis.
Even an American-Israeli military figure did not mince words when he posted a selfie on X in the first week of November 2023, stating: "They let it happen."
A month later, the *New York Times* published a lengthy article accusing Netanyahu of having prior knowledge. He had known for at least a year that Hamas was planning something.
And looking at the most recent developments, an Israeli general stated in an interview with the Israeli TV channel N12 on October 9 that, three months prior to October 7, he had woken Netanyahu up to inform him that Hamas was preparing an attack plan.
There are so many indications—even reported by the Israeli media themselves.
My question, therefore, is this: How much longer will the Netherlands persist in maintaining that Hamas is a "terrorist organization" and October 7 a terrorist attack?
VVD
The VVD (People's Party for Freedom and Democracy) wants to criminalize expressions of sympathy for Hamas, as well as any justification of the events of October 7, 2023.
In this morning's broadcast of *Goedemorgen Nederland*, the Palestinian flag was even wrongly labeled a terrorist flag. This smacks of hatred.
The VVD’s attempt to silence critics in order to maintain a distorted public image—or, if you will, to create the impression that public opinion aligns with the party’s own—borders on the practice of fascism.
I therefore reject the views expressed in the broadcast; after all, they amount to a distortion of history driven by the political influence of a foreign power. This poses a threat to public safety in our country.
Furthermore, I fault the WNL program for participating in the dissemination of historically inaccurate information.
Have we—myself excepted—forgotten that this power appears on the NCIV’s list of terrorist threats?
